Tampa Tarpon Fishing Charters

Imaging fishing on Tampa Bay just as the Sun is Rising and the brightest thing you can see is the silver flash of a Tarpon's side as it roles just under Tampa Bay's Sunshine Skyway Bridge. Tarpon Fishing in Tampa is world class with fish reaching upwards of the 200lb. mark. Tampa's many bridges, artificial reefs, and beaches provide some of the best tarpon fishing on earth.

Tarpon fishing charters in Tampa Bay start of with Capt. Clay catching bait. You can go along if you'd like or you can sleep in for an extra hour, it's your choice. Once bait is collected and you're ready to go, we'll head off to one of Tampa Bay's many bridges, barrier islands, beaches, or artificial reefs. Where we fish for tarpon will depend of the tide and time of year.

Once we're out to the tarpon fishing grounds, we'll likely set out baits and keep our eyes peeled for tarpon showing themselves as they come to the surface to gulp air. This is a dead giveaway that you are in the right area to catch a tarpon.

We'll use a variety of baits when fishing for tarpon in Tampa Bay. We'll use threadfin herring, greenbacks, pinfish, and crabs. Sometimes we'll try several different baits to see what the tarpon are after and sometimes we'll use specific baits based on the conditions. Hill tides in Tampa Bay flush all of the water out of Tampa Bay and with this might flow of water it flushes crabs out through the bridges and past the barrier islands. That's a great time to target tarpon using crabs. We'll throw them out and let them flow naturally along with all of the other crabs that are being flushed out of Tampa Bay.

Once the mighty Silver King eats your bait, your in for the fight of a lifetime. The drag will start screaming and you'll be holding on the the rod for dear life and the tarpon will try to free itself. Tarpon are aerial experts and getting away. They will leap from the water and perform all kinds of acrobatics in an effort to separate themselves from your line. When they do this, you'll need to "Bow to the King". What we mean by that is you need to bend over and reach your rod towards the leaping tarpon to give him as much slack as possible so as not to allow him to pull the hook loose or break your line.

Once subdued, with the Tarpon at boat side, we'll snap a picture or two very quickly with the tarpon still in the water. We no longer take tarpon out of the water for pictures as we've learned that it is not good for the fish's survival rate. We'll then spend a little time reviving the tarpon and the set it on it's way back into Tampa Bay to be caught again.

It's a beautiful, exhilarating, thing to catch a tarpon. When you come to Tampa in the Summer Time, you owe it to yourself to try your hand at a Tampa Bay Tarpon Fishing charter.
